The Ramifications of Grid Closures
Great Canadian Grid closed permanently recently, and that has once again brought on many questions about the viability of Discovery Grid (or other grids too).
To repeat: Discovery Grid is in good shape. The six month rolling reserve I retain is there to handle temporary downturns in revenue. This gives me plenty of time to adjust costs. If some calamity were to cause all revenue to cease permanently, I can rationally deal with the situation because the grid has reserves to keep it going for six months. There would be plenty of time to do an orderly closure if needed. I will notify everyone well in advance. I made that promise when we saw InWorldz close. I still make that promise with the closure of GCG.
But, you need to know that the monthly region tier prices in Discovery Grid are set to make sure a reserve is always there. The price points are there to ensure sufficient servers are available to give good region performance and to have data redundancy and backups.
Ultra low prices that result in razor thin margins or no margins are a recipe for grid closure when disaster strikes. OpenSim is buggy, hardware breaks, mistakes happen. I plan for those situations by setting aside sufficient reserves to deal with them. This is how I keep Discovery Grid safe.
On Currency
Almost all OpenSim grids do not handle their own currency cash-in/out. Instead they use 3rd party currency conversion companies, notably PODEX and Gloebit. Both companies offer some protection (though not federally insured) when a grid disappears. But, even those companies could be stressed during downturns. Please review your virtual currency balances. I suggest you never keep a balance higher than what you can afford to lose.

Once again I will ask for volunteers to help run events using these resources. They are ready to go. All you need to do is contact us to set up scheduling, then do the advertising and run the actual event! Please let me know soonest as I am considering retiring some of these regions to use them for something new if these region are underutilized.
I’ll turn this section over to Kayaker and Tenbears who will talk about a few of these regions to give you a sense of what is available.
Spirit Rock Ranch
Region Spirit Rock Ranch has a beautiful build by Sy Celina (with help from Tenbears and Kayaker). There is a horse racetrack, barrel race course and steeplechase (horse jumping course), all timed so you can come by and compete with your friends anytime. Or just follow the horseback riding trails that run all over the rest of the region. Demo horses are available in the “rental barn”. Tenbears has an airplane landing strip in the middle of the region so you can visit by air. The south edge of Spirit Rock Ranch has a huge surfing beach with waves breaking on it, surfboards, surf kayaks, body surfing and windsurfers (which can jump off the waves and catch MAJOR AIR!) Demo versions of all the surf toys are there on the beach. Behind the beach is a tall dune protecting a dune field with a timed dune buggy racecourse on it. There are several vehicles to try out the dunes.
Bathurst
Region Bathurst is
named after the city in Australia that hosts the famous Mount Panorama auto racetrack. Our Bathurst, built by Tenbears, has two racetracks: One is a challenging twisty course with several jumps over the water. This track has race gates for having competitions. (Currently not working, Tenbears needs to reset them). The other racetrack, reached by driving over the water on a causeway, is a simple oval track. There are cars of all sorts lying around Bathurst.
Earhart Regional Airport
Region Earhart Regional Airport, built by Tenbears, can be reached by car via a causeway over the water from Bathurst. The causeway has drawbridges in case you want to sail through here. This is how you get to the infamous No Doze Cafe. The airport is on an island and currently the ferry is not running, so you will have to TP or fly there. There are not many aircraft available in Discovery Grid yet, there are a few helicopters at the airport. Tenbears has small airstrips set up around the grid. One is on Crocodile Island, an interesting place to visit. Another is on Spirit Rock Ranch so you can land there to go horseback riding. You will have to go exploring to find out if there are other airstrips around the grid.
Discovery Adventure Island
Discovery Adventure Island contains a few of our older exhibits and self-service events. The mystery carnival is on the southwest corner. It is chock full of various rides and games, plus a murder mystery. Solve the mystery, win a prize!
A basement level working bowling alley is near the center of the region. It handles up to 4 players. This bowling alley was created by Xentor Antarix and it is the same one that used to be in the InWorldz Welcome region. On the other side of the bowling alley is a trolley stuck in a dimensional cul-de-sac. Trying walking along the rails to see how that works.
To the west of the bowling alley is the Quad Ball stadium. Quad Ball is a ball game using quad bikes. Comprising of 2 teams RED & BLUE, the object of course is to score as many goals in 5 minutes as possible against your opponents.

Pangaea and Panthalassa
Region Pangaea has a shooting range with rifles, pistols, bows and arrows you can try out on the targets. There are cannons set up to shoot at the pirate town up on the mountain. The buildings explode and catch fire when hit enough times. (Modee also has a Target Town her boats can shoot at, ask her for info). There is a Na’vi area with Pandoran flora and fauna like Ikran living in the tree canopy. The Yerik you see here can be hunted with bow and arrow. Across the valley are huntable dinosaurs. Don’t get the T-Rex mad, and don’t click on the electric fence! Up in the mountains is a lake stocked with kayaks, canoes, inner tubes and swimming to try out. Paddle the white water river down from this lake until it empties into another lake full of sharks and ichthyosaurs that bite. To relax and hang out there is the Lost World Safari Lodge (originally designed by Tenbears as a ski lodge) with fire places, chairs, dinosaur skin rugs and heads mounted on the wall from all my REALLY BIG GAME hunts.
Region Pangaea is mostly water for sailing. There are sailboats and motorboats to try out and a timed sailing racecourse. You might see boats under construction at the docks. The water under the docks is full of swimming critters, some of which bite! The air is full of flying critters that don’t seek you out or bite, so they may be harder to spot. Sail south into the DG Ocean region named Standing Stone Passage and go exploring. (A region that was decorated after the fact to match its mysterious name).
Pangaea is now home to the HMS Titanic which recently hosted ballroom dancing in the grand Salon. During that dance, the ship struck an iceberg, broke in half and sank (while the band played on) so I hope you didn’t miss this epic event. The Titanic has been raised and will repeat the event on May 12th at 5:00PM grid time. Don’t miss it this time! Eventually I may install a button on the Titanic to have it sink on demand for your amusement.

Willow Creek (Snow Country)
An adventure region, 8x8, was started a year ago, this month: WILLOW CREEK. Many hands have been involved in the creation of this region. Originally, the terrain file used was created by Kayaker Magic, after Tenbears Running found an area in the Swiss Alps, that would be the beginning of something he had wanted to build for a long time. Balpien came into the picture and did a significant amount of work, smoothing the terrain file, which gave me, a great starting terrain. Many hours of work was put into the reworking of the terrain, placing ski trails, streams, a small harbor and even a hidden area on the region, that will play into the fun involved on this region in the future.
Three full length working ski lifts have been built. A Funicular takes you to a Trolley. The Trolley moves passengers to the NW corner of the region. Snowmobiles rezzers as well as a very cool building to sit, relax and chat with friends. A very high wire Gondola provides a tour across the entire region, high above the surrounding area. More access to ski lifts from either end of that ride.
A major club house, warming sheds, a lighthouse worth a visit, Shops to visit, a couple rental units as wall as a condominium with four rental units.
This build has assistance from Balpien (Scripts & Terrains, Snow Skis YES), Kayaker (Scripts & terrain file), Jay (Decor), Lorin (sounds), Tenbears (Motivator) and so many others with suggestions.
Willow Creek has a Club too, the Purple Rain. Take the special ride on the Purple Rain Express to get to the top of the mountains. Events will be held there, on occasion at the Purple Rain. Bumper Cars, Ice Skating too.
Oh, did I mention Gliders? Yes, to this region only Gliders built by Tenbears and scripted by Balpien. Flying lessons will be forthcoming in the very near future. I have a group formed clled "Willow Skies Soaring". Members will be taught the correct way to fly the gliders, and I hope to hold some special contests in the future, with awards and perhaps a gift or two. This is something you have never seen on any grid, let alone Opensim.
