2019-10-19 Meeting

1:00PM Meeting Begins
Balpien Hammerer

Greetings, thank you for coming to the quarterly community meeting of 2019. I am Balpien Hammerer owner/operator of this grid. Our grid admins are Jay Copperfield, Lindee Ellsmere, and Tenbears Running. Lindee and Jay have taken on the role of Greeter Manager. On staff doing the OpenSim builds and keeping an eye on the OpenSim core developments is Kayaker Magic. I maintain the servers, pumps, steam pipes and developed the grid manager code that monitors all the regions.

To get the full meeting minutes, which will include all the text-chat take takes place, please go to https://discoverygrid.net, click on the {KnowledgeBase} button then navigate to the “meeting minutes” folder. They will be posted there tomorrow. [Sorry for this late publication]

Though I am giving this talk in voice to speed things up, text chat works best for questions. Please ask them at the end of each topic area when I open up the meeting for feedback. We will respond and write our responses in text chat as well as voice. After the meeting we will expand on the answers in the meeting minutes document.

The last meeting took place Jue 15th. Did everyone get a chance to read the minutes? If so, I’d like to get feedback. We do respond to feedback.

The continuing cyberwar keeps growing. More vulnerabilities in Linux, Windows, and MacOS X were found by hackers and exploited. Linux got hit with more zero-day security updates that fixed newly exploited vulnerabilities. We were not affected by any hacks, but they meant I had to reboot our servers to get them applied. I try to do these when no one is present in the grid, but lately (and this is good news) there are always people on the grid. I do announce maintenance in a grid notice, so DO look at the grid announcement section in the viewer splash page whenever you launch the viewer. Please do that before hitting that friendly “Login” button
You will always see the grid announcement title and it also lets you see the current events happening on the grid (more on that shortly). If you want to see the details of the announcement, click on the blue info icon to expand the contents.

New OpenSim releases

Presently the grid is running Nani 21September, and it is stable. This release speed up avatar rendering and significantly sped up the initial terrain render whenever you TP or log into a region.

Search services: Events, Places, Classifieds

I mentioned this in the last meeting, but it bears repeating that Discovery Grid has events, places, and classifieds working. Events are fully functional. You can search for them inworld through the viewer or through the Discovery Grid WEB site. Events also appear in the viewer’s splash page where you can click on an event which logs you in and teleports you right to the event. To make that work make sure you check the [x] save username and [x] save password settings in your viewer. The details of setting up events are detailed in the last meeting minutes.

Use These Facilities

We see events are being used regularly, but we also know of a number of events that are not listed. The best way to grow the grid is to let others see the rich activities that take place. I’ve not seen any growth in the classifieds. If there is a problem with how to set those up, please let us know. So, do use these facilities; they are your advertising conduit.

There has been some confusion about events. Events are not a calendar. They a simply a list of upcoming events that are auto generated when they listed as recurring. People have asked to show events as a calendar. I held off doing this because I was waiting for MeWe, the forums service DG uses, to make their events programmed by software. That hs not happened to date. Also I received a lot of feedback to use Google Calendar because people like to merge the DG events with their RL calendars. I plan to do that in the next couple of months: events will be auto-posted directly to Google Calendar in read-only mode. Setting events will still be done in the DG events page because that ensures only authorized avatars can change them.
Also, I added estate managers

Advertise InWorld

Advertise your events inworld in the following groups:
· Discovery Events
· Shoppers Guide, managed by Lily Lighcloud,
· Advertise for Free, managed by Jeff Edwards.

Advertising in the metaverse

Having inworld and WEB based events and classifieds is great way to reach inward to the local customer base, but there is a huge world out there in the metaverse. It is equally important to reach out to Hypergrid visitors. Do that in:
· OpenSimWorld.org
· MeWe Discovery Grid forum
https://mewe.com/group/5bd12180c126ec0be29fea93
· MeWe OpenSim Virtual group

Ocean/Seas Terraforming Activity

One of the perks of owning regions in Discovery Grid is that the grid sponsors connecting oceans between all the regions whose owners chose to be part of the community. It is a huge land mass made from 4x4 and 8x8 ocean/sea light duty regions. A number of those oceans were built by tenbears, lovely lighthouses and other nautical emplacements. But during our rapid growth phase we had no time to do that decoration, and so the pimple islands remained as is. Modee Parlee and her piratical crew of Marine Salvage Operators did a great job of ocean terraforming surrounding the LooseCannon region but there remains many a pimpled oceans, and so, Kayaker Magic has helped to remedy this blight. As for ocean terra work, PLEASE write a support ticket for these requests. Direct request to admins or staff cause much havoc.

[Kayaker]
I'm not fond of the default OpenSim terrain, a small round island in the middle of a region often referred to as “Pimple Island”. Way too many of the public Discovery Ocean regions have this terrain. So some time ago I started sneaking around and abusing my admin group membership by terraforming some of these regions and doing something interesting on them. I was pleased to see a picture of one of my efforts show up on MeWe! If you explore the Oceans of Discovery Grid you will discover more sites like that! Eventually the admins caught me in the act and told me I could keep doing this only if I limited the number of prims and removed most of the scripted items. Sadly this meant removing the sharks that bit passing surfers on one of the regions I decorated. I got tired of fractal islands and also got a request for some flat terrain, but when I made some large flat islands in the oceans I was told they were “ugly” and had to remove them. The fractal islands I have placed in the Discovery Oceans often make passage by boats challenging, so I am offering a service called “Operation Plowshare”. If you would like a channel blasted through some of the islands in the Oceans, file a support ticket and I will come do so. This is actually kind of fun, you will want to be there for the fireworks!

We do thank each and everyone here today and those that were unable to attend. These notes, while late in posting, we do apologize, as so many issues have come about with all the attempts to hack into our servers, time has been of essense, and have taken a priority over other duties. Have a great day and thanks to all for all you do for 'your' grid. Be safe.
