1:00PM Meeting Begins

Balpien Hammerer

Greetings, thank you for coming to the second quarterly community meeting of 2020. I am Balpien Hammerer owner/operator of this grid. Our grid staff are Jay Copperfield, Lindee Ellsmere, Tenbears Running and Kayaker Magic. Lindee is the Greeter Manager, Jay manages Gloebit Island the mall with free stores for region owners. Kayaker handles the OpenSim builds while keeping a watchful eye on the OpenSim core developments. I maintain and develop the servers, pumps, steam pipes, the grid manager software that monitors all the regions. Lately I have taken on code development to our version of OpenSim to deal with some of the more egregious bugs that need fixing.

The full meeting minutes, including today’s text-chat, will be at the knowledge-base. Go to https://discoverygrid.net, click on the {I Need Help} then {KnowledgeBase} button to navigate to the “meeting minutes” folder. They will be posted there tomorrow.

Please text chat your questions at the end of each topic area when I open up the meeting for feedback. We will respond and write our responses in text chat as well as voice. After the meeting we will expand on the answers in the meeting minutes document.

OK, the meeting notes are in the DG cubes atop the pylons. You will find today’s meetng, the Janurary notes, and how to set up voice.

[12:57] MidnightRain Glas: wow love those notes I just recieved my kind step by step

But first, some announcements:

Next pop-up market this summer

We are planning our next Seattle Pop-Up Market to coincide with our 4th Birthday Celebrations on July 4th. "Come Celebrate Our 4th on the 4th!" Lindee Ellsmere is in charge of the market, so direct all questions to her.

The market will run from Friday, June 19 through Sunday, July 5, with setup to begin on Saturday, June 13. Set-up will have to be completed before June 18. If you plan to be away during the market time, but want to participate, let Lindee know and she can work out a time for your set-up and/or take down afterwards.

Our pop-up markets have been very successful with visitors from everywhere in the Metaverse! This year, as with the first market, we will not have a specific theme, but we will require at least one exclusive item. Something new that you have never put out for sale before.

To be a part of the market you will need to make sure you are in the Discovery Grid Merchant Group. Lindee will send an information packet to the merchants in this group with dates and more information about the market.

DJ's and concerts are not planned for the market this time, but if anyone wants to schedule a performance or DJ at the Mural Amphitheater during the market event, please contact Lindee to schedule your event.

To recap, if you have any questions or if you are interested in participating in the next Seattle Pop-Up Market as a merchant, please contact Lindee Ellsmere.

State of the Grid

Jillian submitted a question: “Please discuss the issues with the Money Server and whether this issue is scheduled to be fixed. It is still affecting tip jars and money payments during events.”

The grid has been running well since the January mono run-time fixes. The last version brought good speed-ups to the region simulators. Since those fixes plus changes I made to the DC$ money server, no errors have occurred to date. It seems to be solid. If anyone has experience DC$ money transaction problems please write up a support ticket.

On the other hand, I have seen transaction failures in the Gloebit money module. There is a recent update to that module that might fix those problems, but it is designed for the new Yeti OpenSim version. My hope is that the Gloebit company can provide us with a compatible compiled version. Otherwise, I will have to retrofit that code to build in the Nani OpenSim environment, and so there is no definite schedule.

[13:17] Jillian2000 Quintessa: I sent a clarification!

[13:18] Jillian2000 Quintessa: but my clarification sent two examples from last night!

[13:18] Jillian2000 Quintessa: yes'

[13:18] Balpien Hammerer: was it dc$

[13:18] Jillian2000 Quintessa: Kith was there

[13:18] Tenbears Running is online.

[13:18] Jillian2000 Quintessa: so was Jeff

[13:18] Neytiri Omatikaya: w b Ten

[13:18] Jillian2000 Quintessa: ok

[13:18] Fitheach Eun: wb Ten

[13:19] Kith Whitehawk: maybe not errors..... just doesn't go through total failure- however.... it is a lot better

[13:19] Slyder Morgan: it hard to tip at times

[13:19] Jillian2000 Quintessa: I have specific times

[13:19] Jillian2000 Quintessa: will resend in a ticket

[13:19] Kith Whitehawk: Well... it doenst give a notice

[13:19] Kith Whitehawk: never has

[13:20] Jillian2000 Quintessa: Gloebits never fail for me

[13:20] Jillian2000 Quintessa: ooh\

[13:20] Susanna Valeska nods

Response: Balpien – I looked at the times listed in the support ticket, and every transaction was a success. Money was indeed transferred.

[13:21] Harmony Beningborough: Do tip jar failures get logged...ones with DCs?

[13:22] Harmony Beningborough: and other DC vendor?

[13:22] Harmony Beningborough: ok

response: Balpien – every is logged: failures and successes. The grid manager also has code to do auto-refunds if a transaction failed where it took money from the payor but failed to transfer it to the payee. Both payor an payee are notified via IM.

Another question by Jillian: “Is there a features where the Discovery Events calendar could be loaded into a Google calendar that we could subscribe to? This would send reminders of Discovery events to our own Google calendars.

I talked about this possibility in the January community meeting. I said: “...I was waiting for MeWe, the forums service DG uses, to make their events programmable by software. That has not happened to date.” The feature you ask is custom programming. It is lower priority than a number of other things I am working on. It is not forgotten.

[13:23] Kayaker Magic: API=Application Programmer Interface

[13:23] Susanna Valeska: geez

[13:24] Jillian2000 Quintessa: thanks, Bal!

[13:27] Arton Tripsa: lol

[13:27] Neytiri Omatikaya: lol

[13:27] Neytiri Omatikaya: oh dear

Full Deployment to New Servers

In the last meeting, I announced all region servers except RS3 were switched to solid state disks. I am now in the process of moving all private regions in RS3 to the other servers. This will be a couple of regions a week, assuming no other problems arise.

Along with those moves, any regions on rs3 that are owned by Eurozone or Australian people will be moved to rs9. I will contact people first to see if that is what they want.

New OpenSim Releases Timeline

The grid is still running the 12Sept version of NaniSim. So far, to my disappointment, all newer versions of NaniSim, up to 05April2020, have rendering problems. My analysis determined that some change made by the NaniSim developers broke the Object Occlusion feature, making it run radically slower when rendering objects. Rezzing a 1600 prim object takes place in under 2 seconds in the 12Sept release. In releases up to 05April, a 1600 prim object rezzes a few prims a second stretching a 2 second rez into several minutes! Since the NaniSim developers have not fixed this problem, I will work on a bug fix to it for Discovery Grid. Nonetheless, I find NaniSim is still better than yeti. NaniSim has decent Animesh support, excellent bakes on mesh support that works with existing viewers (unlike Yeti), and it has better performance overall. So, it still is worth working on it.

[13:28] Slyder Morgan: i have that happen now

[13:29] Contessa Lacombe: Yes

[13:29] MidnightRain Glas: yes

[13:29] Kayaker Magic: yes

[13:29] Fitheach Eun: yes

[13:29] Susanna Valeska: yes that was fast

[13:29] Harmony Beningborough: yes!

[13:29] Winterlight Bellic: yeah it took a minute

[13:29] Arton Tripsa: yeah'

[13:29] Slyder Morgan: ya

[13:29] Lannorra Sion: yes they are rezzng in

[13:29] Neytiri Omatikaya: lol i am surrounded by them!

[13:29] Lannorra Sion: no not zapped in

[13:29] Kith Whitehawk: fast

Group Notices Fixed

My first go at simulator code development was to fix the insanely long duration when a notice is posted to an in-world group. This problem happens to groups that have many Hypergrid visitors as members, and when those members are on grids that are often offline (hint home grids). The notice posting delays, which used to be 10-20 minutes for some of the larger groups, is now down to 1-2 minutes. That is a 10x speed-up.

Questions?

[13:32] Contessa Lacombe: I have a question.

[13:32] Contessa Lacombe: Should HG folks be able to get group notices from Discovery?

[13:32] Balpien Hammerer: yes.

[13:33] Contessa Lacombe: I don't get them on my non Discovery avatar

[13:33] Balpien Hammerer: yes, they di and should

[13:33] Harmony Beningborough: I have been asking and our hypergridders are not getting them

[13:33] Kith Whitehawk: they jsut have to make sure that their get notices are checked

[13:33] Contessa Lacombe nods

Response – Balpien: After the meeting, I checked all hyper grid members to groups and found almost 300 of the with notices turned off. Most likely this was because the mitigation code was finding a lot of grids offline. This is why so many HG visitors are not getting notices. Since I fixed the group notices code in OpenSim, I also turned on notices for all HG visitors. If anyone does NOT want to receive group notices, go to each group youor are in and turn off notices.

[13:35] Harmony Beningborough: When they turn them back on will we still have the problem?

[13:38] Kith Whitehawk: I guess i should go through the group membership and delete the GCG members. i had forgotten about that....

[13:38] Jillian2000 Quintessa: good point

[13:39] Neytiri Omatikaya *thumbs up*

[13:39] Lannorra Sion: that seems like a good compromise

[13:39] Jillian2000 Quintessa: very informative

Response – Balpien: After the meeting I removed all GCG HG visitors from all groups, so that’s taken care of for you.

New region size/prim placement, allowances and cost.

Placement

Regions attached to the community oceans can now be set in more places than before. After much testing to ensure region crossings between different sized regions do not cause crossing glitches or crashes, we can now place 2x2 regions next to 4x4 oceans, and 6X6 regions can be placed next to the 8x8 oceans. Although 6x6 regions could be placed next to 4x4 oceans that configuration takes up too much 4x4 ocean real estate, so we only allow it on existing 4x4 expansions, and then selectively.

Another question I have been asked is why are private regions straddling two oceans. We do it to reduce the region neighbor count, which reduces lag. A region straddling two oceans has two neighbor regions instead of three.

[13:43] Contessa Lacombe: Question please.

[13:43] Neytiri Omatikaya: good lord

[13:43] Contessa Lacombe: Is there any possibility that in the future you might offer higher prim packages on 4x4s?

Response – Balpien: Yes, and a good question!

Higher Prim Maximum

On March 29 I added two new prim-pack offerings for existing and new regions. You can see the price points on the region order page at the DG WEB site.

If you want more than 60,000 prims on your existing 6x6 or 8x8 regions, you can now upgrade to 75,000 prims. At 75,000 prims a 6x6 is $50/month, and an 8x8 is $55/month.

In the past, I limited the maximum prims in regions to keep the prim density down. Too many prims in one area increases network and viewer lag. Months ago, I enabled object culling in all the simulators to test the bandwidth reduction in the grid’s higher prim regions, and to see how well that feature has managed lag.

The results were excellent, and I now feel confident to increase the maximum prim counts. Note though that object culling works by maintaining in each viewer only the objects within one’s draw distance. If the prims in a region are spread throughout, lowering your draw distance significantly reduces or eliminates any lag. You can take advantage of this behavior if you are in a club setting - lower your draw distance to 128m to remove the unseen lush prims outside.

[13:45] Kith Whitehawk: Contessa, i have a 4x4 with 45k usable.... i am using 36k on Wyldwood with a relative high traffic count.... i will not use any more prims if i can help it

[13:46] Contessa Lacombe: Ahhhh.....that makes sense. I'm not techy, but I've been told that really large regions, like 6x6 or 8x8 tend to have a lot of lag. Do you find that this is true?

[13:46] Neytiri Omatikaya (except for fireworks :O )

[13:47] Contessa Lacombe: Or is it related to higher prim count??

Response – Balpien: The large regions are slower to render all the terrain, but that’s because they are a huge land mass. That in itself does not ause continuing lag. It’s all about prims and what the viewer(s) are sent. Most grid do not enble object culling. Discovery Grid does and it massively reduces lag overall. It costs more server processing time to have object culling enabed, but I find it well worth the cost.

Lower prim Minimums

New 2x2 or 4x4 regions can be ordered as low as 20,000 prims for $18/month. Existing 2x2 or 4x4 regions can also be downgraded to 20,000 prims.

I hope having the 20,000 prim option can help people who need to reduce their expenditures during the pandemic economic crisis. Also, if you own a 6x6 or 8x8 region and if you can reduce your prim count below 45,000, I can lower it to 30,000 prims ($23/mo) for as long as I can afford it during the duration of this pandemic induced economic crisis.

Recap

2x2 and 4x4 regions: 20,000, 30,000, 45,000 prims

6x6 and 8x8 regions: 45,000, 60,000, 75,000 prims

Scheduling

For upgrades or downgrades of existing region prims, please file a support ticket and we will adjust your tier. It is best to request the change at least a week before your next tier is due.

Please do not game the pricing. I am offering these temporary reductions to help distressed people, and it eats into the grid's reserves, but then that is what reserves are for, to help during hard times.

Questions?

[13:33] Gilbert Buchanan: What physics engine do we use?

[13:33] Neytiri Omatikaya: uBode i believe, Gilbert

[13:34] Kayaker Magic: we are running on ubODE

[13:34] Contessa Lacombe: ty

[13:35] Gilbert Buchanan: uBode, aye

[13:35] Balpien Hammerer: we use ubODE in DG

Responding to the Economic Distress Caused by the Pandemic

This is a time of deep strife and crisis. As the worldwide stay-at-home directives to deal with sars-CoV-2 take place, people are losing their jobs. That loss reflects on businesses large and small including virtual worlds. I already have a few region cancellations because the owner will no longer be able to pay their tier. I expect more cancellations to happen. This is entirely understandable. People need to deal with the coming downturn.

But, please when you do cancel, please feel free to stay with us. The shared virtual experience will help us all deal with the physical isolation we have to endure. You are welcome here, always.

What I will do when, regions are let go, is to set aside space to archive any and all canceled regions for up to two years. If you come back later, your region contents will be available for an immediate spin up. If you want an OAR of your region, I will do that, though it might take a short while to get that automated as filtering is a manual process presently.

I maintain a continuing six month reserve for all the DG servers, and, given the staggered due dates on the dedicated servers, I can remove nearly empty servers and consolidate the grid into small numbers of servers to reduce operating costs and stay solvent. Likewise, it is straightforward to spin up new servers to accommodate grid growth. In other words the grid is resilient to these large swings.

So let us enjoy our virtual experience, it will be a lifeline and comfort for us all.

Questions?

[13:51] Kith Whitehawk: how solvent is the server provider?

Response – Balpien: OVH is a world wide server hosting problem. They will actually grow through the coming year as more activities go online. That plus my rolling reserves shoul keep the risk low.

[13:51] Kith Whitehawk: ok

[13:52] Harmony Beningborough: yes!!!

On Network related problems

As we all stay at home to protect ourselves and others, we are relying much more on the internet for contact with friends, to continue to work, and to socialize. This is placing a much heavier load on the internet worldwide. I noticed for the first time my network bandwidth, which used to be 50Mb/sec symmetric, often drops to 2Mb/sec. I can guess others are having similar experiences.

If you see problems with slow texture loading or other artifacts of slow networks (permanently blurred textures, group membership or friends list missing), have patience. I recommend everyone drop their network bandwidth in their viewer to 1000. In this way we can be good virtual neighbors.

Helpful Settings

Two important viewer preferences make a huge improvement in texture loading speed: in Graphics/Rendering enable "[x] Use HTTP for receiving textures"; and in Firestorm/Extras “[x] Enable progressive draw distance stepping” then set the stepping time to the minimum (5).

There is another troubling source of network related partially rendered (blurry) textures or grey textures caused by certain WiFi access points dropping UDP packets. If you are going to connect your computer to the internet using WiFi, you need to invest in a mid range gamer WiFi access point. Remember that most WiFi access points can handle high speed bulk data transfers (this is what is tested by speedtest.net). But what matters is UDP throughput. Gamer WiFi unit are designed to avoid dropping critical UDP packets.

To recap, there are several very different things that each or in combination with each other cause texture rendering problems. They are: slow network access (like DSL); anything that likes to drop UDP packets (Comcast, bad WiFi access point, DSL); disabling "Use HTTP for textures"; iInstalling different viewers or versions into the same app folder. I have fixed many support tickets by addressing these specific problems.
