Eventually, OpenSim code itself will be changed to do a better job of protecting itself from bad viewers. Unfortunately, there are many places throughout the codebase that do not perform sufficient error checking, which is why being selective on viewer versions is important to protect people's data and inventory.
There are many changes and upgrades happening in OpenSim making it necessary to move to newer viewers. Only Firestorm 7.x, 6.6.17, 6.6.14, 6.6.8, and Cool VL Viewer 1.32.2.x will be allowed to login or HG hop into DG. Other older viewers have been found to corrupt avatar inventory.
Also take note that in the coming months avatar voice will only be available in Firestorm 7.x and newer Cool VL viewers when all of OpenSim switches to webRTC.
